چکیده

We study the dynamics and properties of a turbulent flame, formed in the presence of subsonic, high-speed, homogeneous, isotropic Kolmogorov-type turbulence in an unconfined system. Direct numerical simulations are performed with Athena-RFX, a massively parallel, fully compressible, high-order, dimensionally unsplit, reactive-flow code. A simplified reaction-diffusion model represents a stoichiometric H2-air mixture. The system being modeled represents turbulent combustion in the well-stirred reactor regime, with Damköhler number Da = 0.1 and the turbulent velocity at the energy injection scale 30 times larger than the laminar flame speed. The simulations show that flame interaction with high-speed turbulence forms a steadily propagating turbulent flame with a flame width approximately twice the energy injection scale and a speed four times the laminar flame speed. A method for reconstructing the internal flame structure is described and used to show that the turbulent flame consists of tightly folded flamelets. The internal structure of these is virtually identical to that of the planar laminar flame with the preheat zone broadened by approximately a factor of two. The turbulent cascade fails to penetrate the internal flame structure, and so the action of small-scale turbulence is suppressed throughout most of the flame. Finally, our results suggest that for stoichiometric H2-air mixtures any substantial flame broadening by the action of turbulence cannot be expected in all subsonic regimes.

Distributed Flames in Type Ia Supernovae

At a density near a few ×10 g cm, the subsonic burning in a Type Ia supernova enters the distributed regime (high Karlovitz number). In this regime, turbulence disrupts the internal structure of the flame, and so the idea of laminar burning propagated by conduction is no longer valid. The nature of the burning in this distributed regime depends on the turbulent Damköhler number (DaT ), which st...

Flame Surface Properties of Premixed Flames in Isotropic Turbulence: Measurements and Numerical Simulations

An experimental and theoretical investigation of free turbulent premixed flames propagating in isotropic turbulence at neutrally stable preferential diffusion conditions is described. Experiments were limited to the wrinkled thin laminar ftamelet regime and involved mixtures of hydrogen, air, and nitrogen ignited within a fan-stirred combustion chamber. Measurements included flame tomography fo...

Small-scale Interaction of Turbulence with Thermonuclear Flames in Type Ia Supernovae

Microscopic turbulence-flame interactions of thermonuclear fusion flames occuring in Type Ia Supernovae were studied by means of incompressible direct numerical simulations with a highly simplified flame description. The flame is treated as a single diffusive scalar field with a nonlinear source term. It is characterized by its Prandtl number, Pr ≪ 1, and laminar flame speed, SL. We find that i...

Effects of Small-Scale Turbulence on NOx Formation in Premixed Flame Fronts

Abstract A flamelet-based approach that accounts for turbulence-chemistry interaction has been formulated to simulate NOx formation in turbulent lean premixed combustion. In the simulations, the species NO is transported and solved with the chemical source term being modelled through its formation in flame fronts and its formation rate in post-flame regions. The flame-front NO and post-flame NO...

Turbulent Oxygen Flames in Type Ia Supernovae

In previous studies, we examined turbulence-flame interactions in carbonburning thermonuclear flames in Type Ia supernovae. In this study, we consider turbulence-flame interactions in the trailing oxygen flames. The two aims of the paper are to examine the response of the inductive oxygen flame to intense levels of turbulence, and to explore the possibility of transition to detonation in the ox...
